The Ganga is India??s best known river flowing east through the Gangetic plains of northern India into Bangladesh. The 2,510 km river begins at Gangotri in Uttarakhand in the central Himalayas, and drains into the Bay of Bengal through its vast delta in the Sunderbans. The Ganga has enjoyed a position of reverence from ancient times among the Hindus, by whom it is worshipped as the goddess Ganga. According to Jawaharlal Nehru in his Discovery of India, the Ganga is "the river of India, which has held India's heart captive and drawn uncounted millions to her banks since the dawn of history."
